My Pinterest Discovery

So i'm a little behind on this whole 'Pinterest' thing. I know that Pinterest has been around for a while and everyone and her cat seems to have an account, but I only just got on board the bandwagon this week. I have to say - it's pretty good! One evening I sat down with a glass of mulled wine (you'll find this is an obsession of mine in the winter months) and began to 'pin' various photos to some aptly named boards. Wow. That escalated quickly. I now have over 10 boards devoted to interiors, DIY housewares and recipes which I would love to try but realistically wont.

If you haven't tried it out yet, I recommend signing up.

Some of my Illustrations

As well as my DIY makes I thought this would be a nice place to upload some of my illustrative work too!

DIY Chalkboard

I have been very busy recently repainting a number of pieces of old furniture in anticipation of my new blog!

Now I think it's finally time to display some of my creations, alongside some creative advice for those looking to upcycle their own second hand well loved pieces.

The 'Timepiece' Table

This lovely table was originally bought on ebay for a small sum and was a plain, uninspiring shade of brown. It had seen better days, but my mother and I both saw it and thought that its circular shape would look fantastic painted as a timepiece - we weren't wrong!

1 - We began prepping the table by sanding it down - this is important as it removes any residual varnish and allows the paint to stick better.

2- We then painted it in two layers of white undercoat and then used a metallic gold for the exterior edges and legs. I particularly love how ornate the tables legs are. They look like the sort of details you find on old pocket watches!

3 - We began to hand draw and stencil on the clock face features.
TIP - Stencils can easily be made by printing off the template you desire, securely sticking it onto thin card and using a Stanley knife to carefully cut out the shape

4 - We then hand painted the roman numerals and finished it off with gold details using a metallic paint pen!

I love the finished piece and it was really easy to create.
If you love it too it's currently for sale, just message me for details!

Union Jack Table

In celebration of our continued union with Scotland, I took an ordinary wooden side table and turned it into this cute patriotic piece. I love the union flag colours and had wanted to make a piece like this for some time.

I hand painted the top with a really simple masking tape technique, using plain acrylic paints. Acrylic paint is fine for the tops of tables, providing you varnish them and top them with glass (like this piece has been). Otherwise I recommend using a chalk-based paint on furniture - try Annie Sloan paint or wait for my upcoming tutorial for handmade chalk paint.

This piece is also for sale ~ Please click the link below

'Shabby Chic' a Nest of Tables

This is a simple little project anyone can do and the result looks fantastic!
I made my own chalk paint for this nest of tables, but you can find furniture chalk based paints at your local Home DIY shop.

I simply coated the tables in two layers of duck egg chalk paint, waited for them to dry and then sanded them rigorously. Take particular care over any carved details, as these look great when sanded down!

The finished article is very shabby chic and works on most items of furniture.

More makes to come soon!
